Johannes Rigal is a visual sociologist, photographer, curator and workshop teacher. Born in 1983 in Vienna, he completed a BA in Development Studies at the University of Vienna before deciding to ultimately combine photography and social sciences. At Goldsmiths, University of London, he completed an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures, Department of Sociology, in September 2011. His visual work is based on questions surrounding the use of space within the urban, the presence in absence of people in the city, portraiture and its position in photography and the way people make places and places make people. He is currently participating in the CP Photography at the Danube University Krems, Austria. Apart from various projects – the sites project, nightworkers, inanimate portraits -, he has curated several exhibitions in London and works as a workshop teacher. He is based in London and Vienna and is currently a Visiting Fellow at Goldsmiths College.
